In 2023, Tesla sold around 230,000 more cars than BYD. That drop was big enough for Tesla, which sold 386,810 BEVs in the same period, to retake its former position despite posting plunging sales. Both Tesla and BYD are expanding beyond their home markets and investing in factories abroad. BYD sold about 3 million electric cars, including hybrids, in 2023 globally. By comparison, Tesla, which does not sell hybrids, delivered a total of 1.8 million vehicles worldwide last year, which was about 19% of the global market for BEVs.

Read previewJapanese and Korean carmakers cracked the US market long ago — but don't expect Chinese EV seller BYD to repeat that feat. Advertisement"It'd be very difficult for a Chinese EV maker to enter the US market," Seth Goldstein, an equity strategist at Morningstar, told Business Insider. The bill, a key part of US President Joe Biden's economic agenda, offers tax credits worth up to $7,500 for EV makers, excluding any "Foreign Entity of Concern." BYD isn't the only company turning its back on the US EV market. Given that EV sales growth is stalling in US, it's perhaps little wonder companies like BYD are not too bothered.

Say the premium is $2 on that $195 strike heading into earnings and I am sitting on 100 shares (remember every options contract represents 100 shares). If, however, shares hit the $195 strike, then I am, as the seller of that option contract, obligated to sell my shares at $195. To implement this strategy, you would sell a put at a higher strike price and then purchase another put as insurance at a lower strike price. In this case, we would be laying out $2 (paying $3 to buy the $195 strike and collecting $1 by selling the $190 strike). There are two high-level factors that determine an options price, intrinsic value and time value.

The focus is shifting to a new front: Synthetic graphite, an element developed in the late 19th century, but only redirected toward EVs in the past decade. Synthetic graphite could account for nearly two-thirds of the EV battery anode market by 2025, estimates Benchmark Mineral Intelligence. "It’s easier to set up a synthetic graphite production facility than it is to commission new mining sites for natural graphite” because producers can take advantage of incentives in last year's U.S. Inflation Reduction Act to build synthetic graphite capacity in the U.S. or Free Trade Agreement partners, she said. Other experts note synthetic graphite is generally higher purity and offers better and more predictable performance than natural graphite. Still, the construction of new production facilities for synthetic graphite, even with federal incentives, requires a staggering investment, said Novonix's Burns.

OTTAWA, June 14 (Reuters) - Canada will freeze the planned deportation of dozens of students who entered the country using fraudulent university letters of acceptance, Immigration Minister Sean Fraser said on Wednesday. Fraser spoke after the Canadian Broadcasting Corp reported in March that several students from India had been served deportation papers for using forged documents to enter Canada in an alleged immigration scheme. Official data show there were more than 800,000 foreign students with active visas in Canada in 2022. Canada is a popular destination for international students since it is relatively easy to obtain a work permit. The Migrant Workers Alliance for Change has been supporting the students, saying they have spent years in Canada.

Pope extends sexual abuse law to include lay leaders

[1/6] People reach out to touch Pope Francis' hand during his meeting with the faithful of parishes from Rho at the Vatican, March 25, 2023. REUTERS/Yara NardiVATICAN CITY, March 25 (Reuters) - Pope Francis on Saturday updated rules on dealing with sexual abuse in the Roman Catholic Church, expanding their scope to include lay Catholic leaders and spelling out that both minors and adults can be victims. BishopAccountability.org, a not-for-profit organisation looking to document the abuses within the Roman Catholic Church, said the revision was "a big disappointment" and fell short of the "extensive revamping" the policy against the abuses would have required. The updated provisions have been unveiled a month after the Roman Catholic religious order of Jesuits said that accusations of sexual, psychological and spiritual abuse against one of its most prominent members were highly credible. Rupnik has not spoken publicly of the accusations, which have rattled the worldwide order, of which the pope is a member.
Employees have been working around the clock to onboard as many startups as possible in the wake of the implosion of Silicon Valley Bank. Silicon Valley Bank, which had more than $175 billion in deposits and served nearly half of US VC-backed startups, was taken over by US regulators on March 10. "That said, I am worried that this bias towards a Big Four bank is a double-edged sword," Shekar added. "SVB did not think like a big bank. They could understand your operating plan when a big bank would balk at it," Ashley Tyrner, CEO and founder of FarmBoxRX, told Insider.
